Green Fleet Case Studies
"Martinez shares SLCSD’s journey, successes, challenges, and future goals to achieve 100% zero-emission buses (including the district’s planned adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology) with other states and school districts, including the Idaho Association of Pupil Transportation, the Utah Clean Cities Clean Bus and Utility Vehicle Demonstration, and even associations in California and Massachusetts. He also assisted Utah Clean Cities in pushing for Utah’s adoption of clean school bus initiatives, allowing the coalition to promote community awareness and support Utah clean school bus programs. Tammie Bostick, Executive Director of Utah Clean Cities, credits Martinez with driving the clean school bus movement."
"The buses are already realizing substantial cost savings for the district given the comparatively low cost of electricity versus diesel fuel as well as reduced routine maintenance expenses, which is saving the district an estimated $65,000/year. The Bluebird EV buses serve the district’s neighborhood routes within the town of Vernal, with each bus traveling an average of 60 miles per day."
"Jordan School District (JSD) is one such district embracing CNG school buses to reduce air pollutants and save money on fuel. JSD serves more than 56,400 children in the northern Utah communities of Bluffdale, Copperton, Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan, and West Jordan. JSD began integrating CNG buses into its fleet 15 years ago, a trend that has grown to make the district the largest fleet of CNG buses in the state. Today, the district’s 120 CNG school buses represent nearly 45% of its fleet and offset 60,282 diesel gallon equivalents a year."
"ACE Recycling and Disposal is one of the largest independent waste haulers in the western United States and has become known as a leader in cutting-edge green technologies. Since first adopting alternative fuels in 2008, the company’s fleet of 194 vehicles has grown to include 99 heavy-duty, compressed natural gas (CNG) refuse haulers.
"Our commitment to clean fuel technologies reduces our environmental impact, provides the best value for our communities, and tells Utah we believe in responsible business," said Matt Stalsberg, ACE owner and general manager."
"Revolving loan fund programs provide low-cost loans for eligible projects. Utah is home to one such program that assists with alternative fuel vehicle, fueling infrastructure, and diesel retrofit projects. The Clean Fuels and Vehicle Technology Grant and Loan Program (CFV Program), under the administration of the Utah Division of Air Quality (DAQ), also provides grants for qualified vehicles, infrastructure, and equipment. As an agency of Utah's Department of Environmental Quality, DAQ considers these projects important to air-quality improvement efforts."
