Coffee with a Researcher 1: BEAM CORE – Agent-Based Model to Simulate Transportation Behaviors on a Regional Scale

BEAM specializes in realistically simulating travel behaviors, incorporating a comprehensive set of transportation modes beyond personal vehicles, including all forms of public transit, active modes like walking and biking, as well as innovative services such as ride-hailing provided by transportation network companies [e.g. Uber, Lyft] and micro-mobility options such as shared bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters. By simulating a comprehensive set of emerging vehicle innovations, such as electrification and automation, BEAM CORE enables a highly resolved ability to model market penetration, technology evolution, and energy implications of these advanced vehicle technologies and innovative mobility services.
This “conversation with a researcher” will describe the BEAM CORE simulation tool, and share examples of how it can be used to model mobility, traffic congestion, and energy impacts of regional transportation systems. These simulations can help local governments and their regional partners develop and prioritize policies to influence the evolution of fixed-route transit networks; micro transit, micromobility, ridehail, and other innovative mobility services; and new electric and automated vehicle technologies. The webinar will unveil the Application and Collaboration Tool (ACT) that has been developed to enable stakeholders to spatially visualize how changes to the transportation system can influence mobility, traffic congestion, and energy use/emissions. The webinar will provide stakeholders an opportunity to provide feedback on the modeling tools, and what policies are of particular interest in their regions.
