Utah Clean Cities and Communities Accelerate Internship Program
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) offers paid internships through the Clean Cities and Communities Accelerate initiative, which connects early-career professionals with Clean Cities and Communities coalitions. Managed by Argonne National Laboratory, this program supports clean transportation career paths that improve air quality, energy security, and economic prosperity. Internships are available year-round for undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates in fields like engineering, business, marketing, and urban planning. Interns work on projects related to alternative fuels, public infrastructure, and community outreach, gaining valuable experience that often leads to permanent positions in the industry.

How did your experience with the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities contribute to your professional growth and success?
“Utah Clean Cities gave me immediate, real-world experience working in sustainability and clean energy while I was studying to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. I quickly developed the skill of project management and effectively communicating technical ideas to diverse audiences. I also deepened my understanding of alternative fuels, fleet electrification, and climate policy, which have directly informed my work as an environmental engineer. The program also connected me with industry professionals and a network of sustainability advocates that continue to benefit me.”
How did your experience with the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities contribute to your professional growth and success?
“Through the Clean Cities University Workforce Development Program (CCUWDP)—launched in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory—I had the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of transportation and mobility solutions with Utah Clean Cities.
During my internship, I engaged in a wide range of activities that expanded both my technical and professional skill sets. From fleet data analysis to event planning, website development, and public relations, I gained hands-on experience that directly translated into real-world applications.
The CCUWDP internship not only enhanced my knowledge of alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies, but it also allowed me to contribute meaningfully to Utah Clean Cities’ mission of promoting transportation solutions. The connections I built with industry experts, policymakers, and community stakeholders have been invaluable, providing me with a strong network that has continued to support my professional journey.”
How did your experience with the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities contribute to your professional growth and success?
“My time at UCC supported in tandem with my graduate degree pursuits, focusing on sustainability and adaptive management to support communities impacted by environmental factors and climate change.
While at UCC, not only did it support in building upon my previous education and professional experience, I was able to work more closely with my community and focus on local efforts to improve air quality and transition to clean fuel opportunities. UCC also supported in my professional growth through direct work through both federal, state, local government, private and nonprofit partnerships, providing a well rounded understanding of efforts and impacts on multiple sides.”
How did your experience with the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities contribute to your professional growth and success?
“Through the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities, I developed valuable skills in communicating scientific and policy information to the general public, conducting education and outreach through tabling and events, and coordinating between the public and private sectors. I also gained experience in project management, grant writing, and documenting project progress. These skills have been instrumental in advancing my career by strengthening my ability to manage complex projects, such as my master’s thesis, secure funding through travel grants and fellowships, and effectively engage with diverse stakeholders in my interdisciplinary paleoclimatology research.”

“The Clean Cities Accelerate program allowed me to learn and apply communication skills, clean fuel technologies consulting, and project coordination, presenting a unique multifaceted professional development pathway into clean transportation. This Opportunity has since led me to continue with the Utah Clean Cities and Communities team as the Workforce Development and Green Fleets Coordinator”
How did your experience with the Accelerate Workforce Development Program at Utah Clean Cities contribute to your professional growth and success?
“During my time at UCCC, I have learned about the role of clean energy in transportation and just how these projects have the potential to be implemented on a larger scale. I gained skills in graphic design and visual communication to connect with audiences from community members to stakeholders. The UCCC team brings their own expertise and skills that allow you to become very well-rounded in communications, networking, and project management.”
